Cana

The modern town of Cana is 4 miles northeast of Nazareth. It is believed by some that a Franciscan Church is built over the site of Jesus' first miracle, the changing of water into wine. Stone waterpots, similar to those used in Christ's time, are shown.

John 2:1-11
1: And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3: And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4: Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5: His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6: And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7: Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8: And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9: When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10: And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11: This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Cana - God's providence

At Cana, we consider Christ's first miracle where Christ displayed His power and chose not to use secondary causes that would be normal to the human experience. These actions are defined as miracles. While we tend to crave the miracles in this life, it is good not to forget God's providence -- that continued exercise of the divine energy whereby the Creator upholds all His creatures, is operative in all that transpires in the world, and directs all things to their appointed end. Generally God achieves His purposes through secondary causes, but sometimes He does it directly and that is a miracle.

Consider the providence of God:

Psalm 104:19-30
19: He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.
20: Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.
21: The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God.
22: The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.
23: Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.
24: O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
25: So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.
26: There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.
27: These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.
28: That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.
29: Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.
30: Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

Matthew 5:45
45: That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matthew 10:29-31
29: Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30: But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31: Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Job 10:12
12: Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

Philippians 2:13
13: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Proverbs 16:1
1: The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

Psalm 125
1: They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.
2: As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.
3: For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.
4: Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.
5: As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.
